Nord Stream 2 Hydrogen Study

Nord Stream 2 is a twin pipeline stretching 1,230 km through the Baltic Sea. Each line comprises around 100,000 individual pipes, each 12 m in length.

The pipes were procured before hydrogen had gained significant momentum as being a viable energy source for Europe, and therefore wasn't considered in the technical specification.  We managed a study investigating suitability of the Nord Stream 2 pipelines for hydrogen transportation in the future. The desktop study identified the issues to be investigated, including a detailed material test program for the twin pipelines.
